The jungle that is posts and pages

Blog Building

One of the most important things for building your blog is writing posts. When you blog it often contains little stories or anecdotes and of course, as the main thing, what you are or were doing. Usually you publish all that as a post. But what about the recipes, directions and patterns? Post or page?

I started out writing my posts with pictures and text and added a button with a link to the recipe (direction, pattern) page. Then I added that page to the menu for people to find my recipe. However that also meant that my post vanished into the blog archives. Hm, not so ideal. Also for every recipe I had to write twice as much (post and page) with nobody reading the post anymore when looking it up.

After playing around with the menu a bit I decided from now on I will add the recipe (direction, pattern) at the end of the post. You can add posts to the menu as well and use a new navigation label. For example, I created a post during Christmas time called “Making Christmas Decorations – Sock Snowmen”. But in the menu it is listed as just “Sock Snowmen”. When you call it up you can still see the original title and post, but in the menu it has the new navigation label.

Adding posts to your menu with new navigation labels will prevent them from vanishing into the archives. That way every reader gets to enjoy your post anew when they look up your recipe (direction, pattern).

For adding mere information to your blog I find it more useful to use pages. I do not need to blog everything as a post. That is reserved for food and crafts of which I can take pictures. But don’t forget to add your new page to the menu so your readers can find the information.
