Gardening for City Dwellers Pt.2

Setting up the balcony

Well, it has been a while since we started to get our balcony ready. The weather did not play along for most of the time, but now the balcony is finally finished. And it looks great.

After my sweetheart cleard off the worst from the balcony, I started to put out the grass-carpet. Some may laugh, but with our balcony one has to redo everything every year. So I find the wood tiles, which are pretty, too expensive. And the green of the carpet gives me more of a garden feeling anyway. It turned out nice, we think.

Setting up the balcony

On the one side of the balcony I built a little shelf out of 2 boards and some old flower pots. Cover it with grass-carpet and there is the special flower shelf.

On the other side I put flower stairs under the satellite dish. It fits quite well.

And then, as you can see, our tough surviver plants are looking pretty good, too. 🙂

Setting up the balcony

The big flower pots we used for planting potatoes and carrots. And a smaller one contains the sweet potatoes. So it will be exciting to see what happens.

Meanwhile we have some of our herbs & spices outside now as well. The basil is really not doing very well. But the rosemary, camomille and lavender are quite nice. Although I wouldn’t mind them growing a lot more.

Setting up the balcony

Then we finally had a chance to set up the awning. It’s a special one for balconies and not too difficult to set up. But you do need 2 people for it.

The first thing one has to do, is attach the awning cloth. It worked out ok, but we would have preferred more screws for attaching it. So, of course, it was not perfect enough for me. Luckily I own a glue-gun (haha) and the problem was fixed quickly. Much better.

After that we installed the awning on the balcony and we love it. It gives us the shade we need and the yellow of the awning does make a nice light indoors, too. Plus, it looks great.

Now we are ready for a nice evening on our balcony-garden. And we will see how the plants like it. The lady bug seems to enjoy it.

And here you can see some of the seeds that we did or will plant soon. The weather is not the best right now. I hope they will grow anyway.

Setting up the balcony. Great idea.

Update on the plants

So here you can see how our plants are doing. Actually everything is growing quite well. But the pictures above are of the plants where you can really see the growth the most. However, when we can harvest still remains to bee seen.
