Carve your Halloween Jack-o’-lantern
It is almost Halloween again. If you haven’t gotten your pumpkin yet, you better hurry up so you can carve your Halloween Jack-o’-lantern. Living in northern Germany this is not a thing people automatically do. But it is a fun thing to do and more and more are participating. And I see Halloween pumpkins being sold every year. But people over here sure love their Halloween parties. And the kids have defenitely caught on to the entire trick-or-treat thing. I remember being the only one walking around with a bunch of english speaking kids and having to explain to everybody first, what Halloween is and why the kids go trick-or-treat. 🙂 It was great for the kids though. People had no idea how much to give so they ended up with tons of whole packages of candy (it filled an entire big shopping bag) and then a bit of money. OMG
Of course by now we are not going trick-or-treat anymore, but we most certainly will carve some pumpkins. That’s one of our favorite Halloween traditions and sometimes even friends will joins us. Everybody is always sooo happy when they have carved their first Jack-o’-lantern. And sometimes they turn out whacky or friendly, too.
Aside from the carving fun I also love that I get to make some pumpkin puree. Canned pumpkin is hard to find over here. Mostly you find pickled pumpkin. Yuck. Who eats that? I really don’t know anybody who likes it. What’s the obsession with selling it over here? 🙂 Anyway, I love to cook and bake with pumpkin, so the insides of our Halloween pumpkins end up like this:
When we carve the pumpkins we also save the seeds. Slightly roasted in the oven with a little bit of salt, that’s just so yummy.
Here we used small to medium sized pumkins. And still quite a few seeds.
And here are some of our Jack-o’-lanterns. We defenitely had fun carving them and they looked quite decorative in the living room.
The scariest ones that we carved are these pumpkins. And they really looked great in the dark. We used electric tea lights to light them up.
So I hope you are up to carve your Halloween Jack-o’-lantern now, too. Have fun.
